What you need:

  • 450g Odlums Cream Plain Super Flour
  • 1 tsp Odlums Baking Powder
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 25g Margarine
  • 275ml low fat Milk
  • 1 tbsp Sugar (optional)

How to:

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6.
  2. Sieve flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Stir in sugar if using.
  3. Rub in margarine to resemble breadcrumbs, lifting mixture with fingertips to introduce air to the dough.
  4. Add milk and mix to form a soft dough.
  5. Turn onto a floured surface and gently knead to remove any cracks.
  6. Turn the smooth side up and pat into a round shape. Place the dough on a floured tray.
  7. Cut a cross over the top of the dough with a sharp knife.
  8. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 40—45 mins. If the underside sounds hollow when tapped the loaf is fully baked.
  9. Turn out onto a wire tray. Cool completely before slicing.
